Eclectism or cultural polymorphy? Could and how would one be opposed against the dominant exhibition practice of the cultural established and popular, with obvious the lure of attracting a large audience and the financial motive? How should a new museum policy develop today? These and other questions were discussed by Greek and other European museum directors and heads of institutions in the evening symposium in which we were invited by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture last Tuesday at the Byzantine Museum of Athens. Speaking about contemporary art, the initial ascertainment that was set on the table, is not enough on its own to interpret phenomena such as the continuously increasing over the last couple of decades appearance in museums, Biennials and other international organisations of non European artists, or the large mobility of artists from the peripheries to the centres (and the opposite), where they import or produce works in situ, and claim the recognition and the attraction of interest of an over-national public. The beginning was made in Paris in 1989 with the interesting and controversial exhibition of Jean-Hubert Martin
Les Magiciens de la terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou which brought in the foreground a new geography of artistic production, unknown until then. The discussion on the artistic and cultural impact of globalisation opens up for good in the area of museums and centres of contemporary art. The foundation of
Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin the same year, is a characteristic example which revealed, through transcultural collaborations, experimental quests of contemporary artists from Latin America, Asia and the Arab world. Let’s keep a critical look. The need for re-evaluation of west-centrism in museum policy releases creative forces, opens up new artistic fronts, enriches our cultural knowledge and experience. On the other hand, the expansion of the artistic market brings a new economic dimension, which should not however dictate in any way, exhibition policies and museological programming. Through these and other questions the EMST designed from its beginning a clear policy of cultural pluralism and mainly transcultural dialogue of works and artists. In the crossing and the intersection of cultures it seeks the recognition of difference and unity.
