Growing Interests, 2009

Το έργο Growing Interests αποτελείται από δύο στοιχεία. Μία σειρά διακοσμητικών σχεδίων με ασβέστη στα πεζοδρόμια της Αθήνας, που σηματοδοτούν τα μέρη όπου ιδιώτες φροντίζουν για πράσινο μπροστά από τα σπίτια και τα μαγαζιά τους, και μία συλλογή από γλάστρες με φυτεύματα από τα φυτά του δημοσίου χώρου που δωρίζουν οι ιδιώτες αυτοί στο ΕΜΣΤ.
Η ανάγκη των κατοίκων μιας πόλης σαν την Αθήνα, με δρόμους και πεζοδρόμια γεμάτα αυτοκίνητα και μηχανάκια, και η επιμονή με την οποία φροντίζουν για φυτά στα πεζοδρόμια, φυτά που δυσκολεύουν όσο και οι ίδιοι να επιβιώσουν στις συνθήκες της μεγαλούπολης, ήταν αυτό που προκάλεσε το ενδιαφέρον μου. Μέσα από μια σειρά φωτογραφιών, κατάλαβα ότι η Αθήνα θα μπορούσε να θεωρηθεί καταπράσινη αν το βλέμμα συγκεντρωνόταν στην ιδιωτική φροντίδα για πράσινο στο δημόσιο χώρο.
Οι κάτοικοι της επιμένουν σε μια συνήθεια που θυμίζει την ζωή στην επαρχία αλλά ταυτόχρονα θέτει ερωτήματα για το πώς μοιράζεται, οργανώνεται και χρησιμοποιείται ο δημόσιος χώρος μιας σύγχρονης πόλης. Το έργο Growing Interests βασίζεται στην ιδέα της ανταλλαγής και του αμοιβαίου ενδιαφέροντος, έννοιες που βρίσκονται πολύ κοντά στα κοινά συμφέροντα.

Growing Interests consists of 2 elements: a series of decorative pavement drawings made with chalk which mark the places in the city where citizens take care of plants in front of their houses and shops (visible in the center of Athens) and two: a collection of plants donated by those citizens to the museum (on show at the EMST).
The necessity and perseverance citizens of Athens to create and care for ‘their green’ in the public space, reflects the struggle to survive and protect what’s your own in the big city, but at the same time is about giving and sharing. This moved me and held my interest. Through a series of photographs I took, I realized that Athens could be considered very green, when focusing on the individual green in the public space.
The citizens continue a habit that reminds one of life on the countryside, but at the same time it raises some questions about how we share, organize and use the public space of a contemporary big city. Growing Interests is based on the ideas of exchange and mutual interest which I believe are very close to common interests.
